Bev Arnold bevarnold@jayco.net

Coach Bev Arnold has been a Jay County resident all of her life. She graduated from Portland High School where she competed in volleyball, basketball, track, and cheerleading. She received her BS, MA, and Secondary Administration license all from Ball State University. Upon graduating from Ball State University in the fall of 1970, Coach Bev first taught and coached in the South Adams school district. When the new Jay County High School (JCHS) opened in 1975, Bev took the position of physical education teacher, head girls swim coach, head girls gymnastics coach, and Patriot Majorette/Guard Director. She later served as assistant girls soccer coach for ten years. Her last year of coaching gymnastics came in 1996 as swimming for high school girls moved from a fall to a winter sport and conflicted with the gymnastics season. She continued as the head JCHS swim coach until 2008 when she became Assistant Athletic Director and retired from high school coaching.

Actually Coach Bev began her coaching career with the Jay County Summer Swim Team in the summer of 1965 while still in high school. Bev has been a coach of the summer swim team since that time, except for a couple of summers just after getting married. In 1992, Coach Bev formally organized the Jay County Winter Swim Team. For fourteen years prior to that time (1978 - 1992), Bev coached area swimmers who swam USS (now USA) meets “unattached.”

In all, Coach Bev has 46 years coaching summer teams, 33 high school seasons, and 33 winter club seasons. That’s 112 years of coaching and she isn’t even 100 yet!!!

While coaching at the high school level, Bev was recognized 5 times as Sectional Coach of the Year, 6 times as Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) District 4 Coach of the Year, once as 2nd runner up State Coach of the Year by the Indiana High School Swim Coaches Association, and twice as State Coach of the Year by the ICGSA. She has served on the ICGSA swimming committee since 1996 and has been the chairperson or co-chairperson since 1998. She currently serves as the liaison between the coaches and the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) at the high school girls state meet. In addition, Bev has served on committees for IHSAA redistricting for swimming and is an IHSAA licensed official in swimming, gymnastics, and volleyball. Bev is one of the founders of the Indiana High School Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame (IHSSDHOF) and has served on its Board of Directors and as treasurer since its inception in 2005. The purpose of the IHSSDHOF is to honor those athletes, coaches, and special contributors who have contributed to high school swimming and diving in the State of Indiana. It will be a means of recognizing, preserving, and promoting swimming and diving in the state.

Bev and husband Steve have four children. Jason (wife Missy, sons Sam and Eli), Andrea (husband Tommy, daughter Ryleigh), Abby (husband Kyle) and Derek (wife Mandy). This past summer found Bev coaching and cheering on her grandchildren in swimming!

Coach Bev’s philosophy is, “Be the best you can be each time you step up on the blocks or dive into the pool. You will never have that exact same race opportunity or practice opportunity again. Don’t waste the moment - believe in yourself to achieve your dreams.”
